New Year :: New You :: Simple Ways to Lose Weight

December 20, 2012

Do Well in 2013
Next Week: Saving Money

My weight yo-yos. Always has, always will. I get big (I'm at my biggest), then I get small. My body doesn't do well with stress, even if I eat well. Ever since I had Brady, my workouts have been almost non-existant. I was fat in college and I was super skinny - I've seen it all.

Everyone wants to make weight loss their new year's resolution, but I'm asking you not to look at it that way. Start before the new year starts - don't start a diet on a Monday, or on the first of the year. Do it now, for a better you.

I'm going to share a few of the things I have liked using that have helped me lose weight over the years.  The free membership to the gym in college really helped - but now I am a lot more busy and need to work out at home. I bought an elliptical and barely use it - happens to all of us haha.

Weight Watchers
I think we all have a different idea of Weight Watchers than what it really is. We remember the days when our parents or friends' parents went to meetings and had to weigh-in in front of everyone. Those days are gone. You can still go to meetings, if you want, but when I've been on Weight Watchers it's been all digital. Between the website and the iPhone app, it's so easy.

You get a set points per day and week and you can eat anything. You can eat chocolate cake, it's just going to be a few more points than broccoli. Stay within your points and workout and you'll do just fine eating whatever you want, just in moderation! This is the easiest for people who work in offices and constantly go out to eat or don't have good self control. I highly recommend it.

The 17 Day Diet: A Doctor's Plan Designed for Rapid Results

A doctor's plan for rapid results. I'm not really one to consider diets, but I know several people who have done it and lost 10-15 pounds in 17 days. There are 3 17 day cycles, the first is the hardest, but very effective.

After 3 days I was really in the routine and loved it. Basically, you can eat as much turkey, fish and chicken all day long, with moderate portions of eggs, probiotics, fruit and vegetables. Cycles 2 & 3 add more back into the diet. Not only does this clean out your body, but it cleans out your skin. About a week into it, I broke out a lot, it sucked but my face was purging all of the bad crap in my body. I lost 7 pounds in 9 days and then had to go on a business trip, so I kinda didn't stick with it. I highly recommend this diet as well! You just have to have a little determination and know that it works.

The 17 Day Diet is a book and it is a quick read. You read the first chapter, then it gives you a grocery list for Cycle 1, plus all of the recipes, so you don't have to try to figure out what to cook. I recommend following each day by day meal plan to make it easy.

In 2009, while Travis was deployed, I would do a workout DVD every day when I got home from work. I'm picky about DVDs - I don't like people yelling at me and I don't like really fake and peppy people. The Firm was perfect - they have a variety of DVDs so it was nice to switch it up. The workouts weren't too hard, but they worked really well.

The Firm Express DVD Kit

I like short workouts with fast results. What's better than 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week? Scheduled workouts that don't take up too much time are perfect for me. I really like The Firm's DVDs and this is my newest purchase. I'm starting to get back into a routine and I really like it. From cardio to sculpting, it covers all bases.

Beginning Yoga with Chrissy Carter

I have never given yoga a chance. I don't have patience. After Gaiam gave me the opportunity to review a yoga dvd for beginners, I gave yoga a chance. I didn't make it through the entire DVD because my to do list was running through my head, but I did do the first portion and it felt really good. While I don't have much patience, I do have back problems. The stretching felt great and I like that they explained each pose slowly and gave me a chance to perfect it. I will keep trying this DVD and giving myself more and more time - next time I'll get my to do list out of the way. I love that I had the chance to try it without going to a yoga studio and making a fool of myself. I definitely felt it in my hips the next morning, which is a good thing!

I'm looking forward to really getting into yoga, I hope. Many thanks to Gaiam for sending me a complimentary copy of Beginning Yoga.

Don't start your diet on a Monday - it's always so hard and it's typical. I started the 17 day diet on a Sunday and I like to start my new workouts on Saturdays or Tuesdays. Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer any.  How are you going to get in shape and lose weight, or eat healthier?
