show & tell :: my career

November 05, 2012

This week’s show & tell topic is: Career // Job
This is very bittersweet for me to write as this week is my last week at my job and I’m training my replacement. You can quickly read about why it’s my last week here. So, with all of that said, I will answer this as if I am not leaving, so I don’t have to explain it all again—plus it is my job right now.

Tell us what you studied in college. Is your job now related to what you studied?
I studied Journalism and Marketing in college—with evolution the two combined and became social media.

Tell us what your everyday job looks like.
I work every waking minute of the day. I am a social media and email marketing strategist, so being connected and checking social networks is second nature and something I’m always doing—monitoring and maintaining my brand’s presence online.

Do you have a picture of you at work? Show us.

In 10 years, what do you see yourself doing? Same thing? More? Tell us.
I will not be at the same company, but I will still love and be working in social media // digital marketing. I cannot wait to see what social media and email marketing looks like in 10 years. Can you imagine?

Tell us what you have learned, and what {if any} recommendations you may have for those looking to go into the field you are in.
I actually have a post coming up later this week about how I explain my job to people who don’t really understand what I do. I posted a couple weeks  ago about what I’ve learned in social media.

If you’re looking to have a career in social media you need to already be doing it. I don’t mean checking your Facebook every 5 minutes. I mean, being engaged with brands, industry leaders, keeping up with trends, knowing what the next best thing is and networking. You can’t just wake up one morning and say I want to work in social media, I know how to use Facebook so I’m going to apply for a job. Smack yourself if you think that’s what I do all day.

I don’t love numbers, but I love social media and email marketing strategy!
