10 Holiday Hostess Gifts

November 20, 2012

We go to our friends' house for dinner quite often. We all take turns hosting, mainly having playdates for our sons. We don't bring gifts, but we offer to bring a dish to pass. I feel Thanksgiving is different. People prepare for this day for a week or two, and typically cook for a few days, stressing to make sure everyone loves the food and has a great time.

Take some of the stress off of your hostess by bringing a dish or two to pass {ask your hostess first, make sure it's something she's not planning on making}, a bottle of wine {or case of beer} and maybe a small gift. You do not have to go out of your way, but you should do something to show your appreciation. After all, you know you are relieved that you don't have to cook all of that!

10 Dinner Hostess Gift Ideas
With a female hostess in mind, I'm thinking of the host. At the end of the day, what will she want? What will make her relax? What does she really want?

bottle of wine
A bottle or two or three of a nice wine. Don't bring the boxed stuff, or anything under $10. You don't have to splurge, but don't buy a headache in a bottle. Buy something you would like to drink. What does the guy at the speciality store recommend? Buy a wine that would be great with a turkey dinner, and one for dessert.

Thanksgiving white wines :: Riesling, Gew├╝rztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Pino Grigio & Albarino
Thanksgiving red wines :: Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Syrah, Beaujolais Nouveau, Ros├ę

toilet paper & paper towels
haha right? super weird, but it makes sense. If someone is having a lot of people over, all of the guests are probably going to run them out of paper goods. I wouldn't just bring this, but it is thoughtful. Just out there. Throw in a bottle of Poo Pouri, so everyone can spend Thanksgiving day in a good smelling bathroom and they'll feel comfortable. C'mon, you know everyone eats too much food and uses the bathroom. Don't make them hold it. No one will ever know they went when you have poopouri!

chocolate
Chocolate, dessert, something the host can divulge into after everyone has left if there is room in her stomach.

flowers
Everyone loves flowers and they make for a great centerpiece.

gourmet gift basket
Think cheese, wine, crackers and more. Everyone loves a gift basket, no matter what's inside!

spa gift basket
Your hostess is going to be exhausted. What's better than a bath, foot cream and a cute nail polish? Throw in a cookie for the husband for giving her a foot massage.

wine charms
Perfect for a party. Everyone is always trying to figure out who was drinking out of which glass. Problem solved.

a fun game
Apples to Apples or 5 seconds are really fun games to play with groups. The conversation can stray from the game and they don't take much thought. Well, they kind of do, but there aren't huge rule books. Dirty minds is also fun!

candles // scentsy
Self explanatory. Everyone loves a good smelling home!

stationery
Females love stationery, especially personalized stationery. It's too late to order custom stationery, but you can usually find some with an initial on them.
