{show & tell} How I Met Your Father

October 29, 2012

Tell us about how and when you met your love and what attracted you most to him.

Follow along—I’ll make it as easy as I can.
In 2002, my friend Dan and I were going out to dinner and he invited this random guy, Travis, so I brought my friend Katie along, thinking we would hook them up. Those of you who know me personally, are laughing your asses off right now. That was the end of that—we thought Travis was annoying. For the record, he was fresh out of boot camp and trying to get served beer (like a typical Boot) at Applebee’s with his military ID.

At the end of 2003 I was on the phone with our friend Jason, who was with Travis. Jason needed to go spit game at some hoe young lady, so he gave Travis the phone. Travis and I started talking and that was that. A few days later he got my 2-way and we talked most of his drive from Michigan back to Missouri. We continued talking and the rest is history.

In March of 2004 he came to Michigan to spend the weekend with me and that’s when we kind of officially met again and started dating.

Starting our relationship on the phone was the best—we always needed something to talk about so we got to each other really well, really fast. I was attracted to his looks and his personality. The perfect combination, right?  Not to mention he had a career and wasn’t a deadbeat.

We got married in 2007 and lived in California until February 2012—now we’re trying to survive in horrendous Virginia Beach.

Show us the very first {or one of the first} pictures you guys ever took together. {Feel free to show us more than one}
Ew—you asked for it. This was the first night he was in Michigan to visit/meet me.

Tell us some of your favorite memories that you two had together.
Dating—typically once a month when he would drive to Michigan for the weekend. There’s something about a long distance relationship that really brings two people closer together than other relationships. We were so, so, so excited to see each other. We went camping and drove to California.

Engaged—He was in Iraq. The hand written letters and phone calls were the best, though they were few and far between.

Married—having Brady, duh. All of the fun we had in California when he was actually in town, our cross-country road trip and moving to VA. Moving to VA definitely sucked and still sucks, but it’s interesting. . .

Tell us your favorite qualities about this man, what makes him "the one."
I’m not really one to sit and list qualities to the public, or even to him. We get a long, we have a difference in opinion sometimes, we have the same sense of humor, we are sarcastic and get along like siblings. Most importantly, we have fun together.

Tell us what your "date nights" typically look like.
Haha, what? Date night? With a 20 month old? With no baby sitter? With no family around? Clearly this question wasn’t written for military families.
